Mitch: Is solar even worth it in Idaho in 2025? We’re not Florida, and our power bills are lower than many states—so does it make sense? I’m Mitch with Big Dog Solar. We grew up here—HQ in Pocatello—and we’ve done everything from small homes to ag and commercial. Even our HQ runs on solar.
We’ll rate Idaho on three things—energy prices, sun hours, and incentives/programs—each 1–10, so you can see if the math pencils out for you. Remember: Idaho varies a lot—from the Panhandle to the central mountains to eastern/western Idaho—so model your address.
Energy rates: Traditionally low here, but trending up. That’s why locking in your own production can help. Score: 7.5/10.
Sun hours: Not Arizona or Florida, but comparable to sunny states like Colorado—region to region it varies with weather and snowpack. With the right design, systems perform well. Score: 8/10.
Incentives/programs: Idaho’s state deduction helps, there are low-interest loan options, and there’s the 30% federal credit. Export credits vary by utility, so know your tariff. Score: 7/10.
Bottom line: Not an automatic yes, not a no either. With rates rising, solid sun, and meaningful incentives, it’s worth running the numbers. Questions? Reach out and we’ll model your roof and utility plan.
