Big Dog Solar recently supported a local STEM school where students designed and built their own solar ovens. The team helped judge the ovens based on speed and creativity while the students used sunlight to melt chocolate and marshmallows for s’mores. One group even reported boiling water with its design.
Solar ovens and residential solar panels work differently, but both demonstrate the useful energy available from sunlight. A solar oven captures sunlight as heat, while photovoltaic panels convert sunlight into electricity that can power a home or charge a battery backup system.
Community activities like this give students an engaging way to explore science, engineering, and renewable energy. Big Dog Solar is proud to support local learning in communities served by its Pocatello and Boise-area teams.

Host: We are here supporting a local STEM school. The students built solar ovens, and they invited me to be one of the judges.
They are making s’mores with marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers. We are going to see which oven is the fastest and which students created the most unique version of a traditional solar oven.
The teacher just started the timer, and the students are putting the ingredients inside their ovens. Now we are going to see how long they take.
How is it coming?
Student: Oh, yeah. Your chocolate is doing well.
Host: How is it working?
Student: It is doing pretty well so far.
Student: We boiled water in it, as a matter of fact.
Host: You did? Oh my gosh, these students are so smart. Just look at this one from a visual standpoint!
We are going to call this student “Buddy Crocker.” This is first place! You received a Mountain Dew, a cookie, some candy, and a bag to carry everything. Congratulations. Good job, Andrew!
It is amazing what solar energy can do. It can power your home, and it can power these ovens and make a mean s’more. This seems like a good day at work to me.
Work? Yeah, I have to get back to work later. This is play!

Skeptical About Solar? You’re Not Alone. In this video, we read a real review from a homeowner who wasn’t sure about solar at first — and what happened next might surprise you.

Energy independence starts with producing more electricity at home and deciding how that energy is stored and used. Mitch explains how an owned solar-plus-battery system can reduce reliance on the utility while giving a homeowner greater control.
